Why Is My Cat Not Drinking Water? What Six Fountains and One Vet Bill Taught Us
Most cats drink less than their owners expect, and that is usually normal — a cat on wet food gets up to 80% of its water from the bowl it eats from, not the one it drinks from. What is not normal is a change. A cat that used to drink and suddenly stopped, or one that started drinking noticeably more, needs a vet rather than a new fountain.
That distinction is the whole article. Almost everything else people try — including the thing we sell — matters less than it looks.
How much water a cat actually needs
Cornell's Feline Health Center puts it at roughly 4 ounces of water per 5 pounds of lean body weight per day. A 10-pound cat needs about one cup daily, total.
Total is the important word. That figure includes water from food. Wet food runs up to 80% water, so a cat eating mostly wet food may barely touch its bowl and still be perfectly hydrated. A cat on dry food has to drink nearly all of it, which is why dry-fed cats appear to be the "good drinkers" — they have no choice.
Before worrying about a cat that ignores the water bowl, check what it eats. A wet-fed cat drinking very little is not a problem to solve.
The test everyone uses, and how it misleads
The standard home check is skin turgor: lift the skin between the shoulder blades and watch it fall. Under 5% dehydration it snaps back immediately. Past that it settles slowly or stays tented.
Two things make this less useful than it sounds.
Older cats fail it while perfectly hydrated. Cornell notes geriatric cats often show reduced skin turgor regardless of hydration, because the elasticity itself has changed. If your cat is twelve and the skin is slow, that tells you about the skin, not the water.
It only detects a problem that is already significant. Below 5% dehydration the test reads normal. A cat can be meaningfully behind on fluids and still pass.
The gum check is a better first pass — lift the lip and touch the gums, which should feel slick and wet rather than tacky. It is quicker and less confounded by age. Neither test replaces a vet, and both are for confirming a suspicion rather than screening a healthy cat.
The uncomfortable part: fountains may not do what we imply
We maintain six water fountains and we sell them. So take the following as costing us something to publish.
In 2010, Grant ran a controlled crossover trial on 13 healthy cats in their own homes, published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery. Each cat was measured on a bowl and on a fountain, 7 days to acclimate, 14 days between measurements. The headline looks good: fountain intake averaged 31.6 ml/kg/day versus 22.9 from the bowl, statistically significant.
Then the study checked whether it mattered. Urine osmolality — the number that actually reflects hydration — came out at 2537.7 with the fountain versus 2468.9 with the bowl. No significant difference. The extra water did not show up in the cat.
The likely explanation is in the control data. A fountain sitting in an empty room with no cat lost 108 ml per day to evaporation, splashing and retention in the pump housing. The bowl lost 25 ml. Much of the "extra drinking" was water the fountain lost on its own.
One more detail worth stating plainly: one of the 13 cats developed vomiting and aggression toward the fountain and refused to drink from it. Those behaviours stopped when the fountain was removed. That cat was excluded from the results.
Also worth knowing: 83% of owners believed their cat liked the fountain. Owner impression and measured hydration were not the same thing.
None of this makes fountains useless. Some cats clearly drink more from them, and 42% of owners saw their cat playing with the fountain, which for an indoor cat has its own value. But if you bought one to fix a hydration problem and nothing changed, the study says that is the expected outcome, not a defective product or a stubborn cat.
What moves the number
Ranked by how much difference we have actually seen:
1. Wet food. Nothing else is close. Switching a portion of the diet to wet food, or adding a tablespoon of water to what is already served, raises total intake more reliably than any drinking vessel. This is also the intervention with the best evidence behind it.
2. Bowl location. Cats avoid drinking beside their food and beside the litter box — an instinct about contamination that survives indoor life. Our two least-used stations were both within a metre of a food bowl. Moving one to a hallway corner took it from nearly untouched to refilled every other day.
3. Number of stations. In a multi-cat home this is a social problem, not a thirst problem. Cornell explicitly lists territorial conflict as a cause of reduced intake: a cat blocked from the only water source by another cat simply drinks less. We run five stations for five cats, deliberately in separate rooms and sight lines.
4. Bowl shape. Whisker contact with a narrow rim genuinely puts some cats off. A wide shallow dish costs nothing to test and rules the variable out in a week.
5. Flavouring. Cornell suggests a small amount of tuna water or low-sodium chicken broth. It works, but it converts water into food that spoils, so it needs the same handling as wet food.

When it is medical
Call a vet rather than adjusting the setup if you see any of these:
- A sudden change in either direction. Increased thirst is often the first visible sign of chronic kidney disease, diabetes or hyperthyroidism, and it is the one owners most often dismiss as harmless.
- Not drinking combined with not eating, lethargy or vomiting.
- Mouth pain signals — dropping food, chewing on one side, bad breath. Dental disease makes drinking hurt, and Cornell lists it among the causes of reduced intake.
- Sunken eyes, or gums that stay tacky.
The pattern matters more than the volume. A cat that has always been a light drinker and is otherwise well is different from a cat whose habits changed last week.
What we changed after the vet bill
One of our five, a nine-year-old, went in for what we assumed was a urinary issue. It was, and the vet's first question was not about the fountain. It was about how many water sources there were and where they sat.
We had four fountains at the time, three of them in the same open-plan room. Functionally that is one water source with three taps, and the most timid cat was being displaced from all of them.
We changed three things: separated the stations across rooms, moved every one of them away from food, and added wet food to the two cats who were dry-fed. The vet visits stopped. We did not buy a different fountain.
Summer raises the stakes on all of it — a dehydrated animal cools itself less efficiently, which is why we treat water stations as heat-safety equipment from June onward. If you do want a fountain, buy it because your cat enjoys moving water, not because you expect it to fix hydration. Ours are in the water and feeding range, filters included, and we would rather sell you a filter subscription you use than a fountain that sits dirty.
What this article cannot tell you
The Grant trial had 13 cats and the author says plainly that a study this small may miss real but modest effects. It measured healthy cats only — whether a fountain helps a cat with existing kidney disease is a different question and was not tested. Cornell's intake figure is a population guideline, not a target for an individual animal.
Our own observations come from five cats in one household. That is a case study, not evidence.
